Chapter 1:-Computer Basics
What is Computer:-A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data.
Who Created The Computer :-First computing device. Charles Babbage, an English mechanical engineer and polymath, originated the concept of a programmable computer. Considered the “father of the computer”, he conceptualized and invented the first mechanical computer in the early 19th century.
Chapter 2:-Computer Memory and Storage
Memory Hierarchy:-The hierarchical arrangement of storage in current computer architectures is called the memory hierarchy. It is designed to take advantage of memory locality in computer programs. Each level of the hierarchy is of higher speed and lower latency, and is of smaller size, than lower levels.
Random-access memory (RAM):- Random-access memory (RAM) is a type of storage for computer systems that makes it possible to access data very quickly in random order. The term RAM has become associated with the main memory of a computer system.
RAM is considered volatile memory, which means that the stored information is lost when there is no power. So, RAM is used by the central processing unit (CPU) when a computer is running to store information that needs to be used very quickly, but it does not store any information permanently.
Read Only Memory (ROM):-Once data has been written onto a ROM chip, it cannot be removed and can only be read. Unlike main memory (RAM), ROM retains its contents even when the computer is turned off. ROM is referred to as being nonvolatile, whereas RAM is volatile.
Types Of ROm:-1-EEPROM,2-EPROM,3-PROM
Primary Memory:-Primary memory is computer memory that a processor or computer accesses first or directly. It allows a processor to access running execution applications and services that are temporarily stored in a specific memory location. Primary memory is also known as primary storage or main memory.
Secondary Memory:-Secondary memory is where programs and data are kept on a long-term basis. Common secondary storage devices are the hard disk and optical disks. The hard disk has enormous storage capacity compared to main memory. The hard disk is usually contained inside the case of a computer.
Ex:-SD card,Hard disk etc.
Difference Between Primary Memory and Secondary Memory
|Primary memory||Secondary Memory|
|Low Capacity||High Capacity|
|Works directly with the processor||Not connected directly to the processor|
